Excellent - for what it isReviewed by Some guy from VA, 2010-03-03
It's a very simple player, which I bought to watch foreign DVD
discs - and it works great for that purpose.
Mine came with US power plug, but has auto switching power supply,
110-240V; get an adapter plug and you can use it all over the
world.
It plays american DVDs - Region 1, NTSC.
It plays DVDs I bought in Europe - all of which seem to be "region
free", PAL. So I don't know for sure if it would play DVDs
designated for any specific region, other than 1.
It comes with relatively "low tech" connectors:
- composite video (RCA plug)
- component video (3 RCA plugs)
- S-video
- stereo sound (2 RCA plugs)
- coaxial digital audio (RCA plug)
It can output either NTSC or PAL signal to the TV. There is
appropriate setting in the menu - defaults to "auto", but you can
also change it to either PAL or NTSC. And since setting it
incorrectly on one-system TV could leave you with no picture, there
is a sticker on top of the unit, describing which buttons to press
on the remote to reset the DVD to defaults.
Remote control is small, crowded and definitely cheap-looking - and
it has to be pointed directly at the sensor on the DVD player
(somewhat annoying). There is no LCD display on the unit, and only
3 buttons (eject, play/pause and stop). Overall the player
certainly "looks it's price" - but as long as it works, I'm fine
with it.
I bought one of these for myself, one for my mom, and another one
for my sister living in Europe :).
Get the Toshiba insteadReviewed by Angela Wilson, 2010-02-22
My DVD player is about seven years old and starting skipping a bit.
We purchased a Toshiba SD4200 Digital Progressive Scan DVD Player,
Black from Amazon recently and was incredibly pleased with it and
wanted another one. Ultimately, I decided to try this Coby system
from Hastings, where I had enough trade in credit to get the $30
system free.
I wasn't expecting much, but I did think it would be a decent
system, since many Coby items get great ratings. Unfortunately,
this one should have been about $10, for as long as I think it will
last.
This system is extremely light-weight. Every DVD I've played so far
has skipped at least once - not badly, but enough to cause concern.
I think it is sensitive; you move and it skips (like when you jump
up and down while playing records on a system that doesn't
accommodate for movement.)
The remote control is light as a feather and likely won't last
long. If you have kids or pets, they will tear it up pretty quick.
And please, do NOT step on it. No way will it stay together. It
does not include forward or reward buttons, which I used frequently
to rewatch scenes or forward through bad ones. I want to see if I
can find a universal remote so I at least have that.
My other complaint is the DVD tray. The slot itself doesn't come
all the way out, so you have to tilt the DVD slightly so it fits
under the machine. I don't like that at all. If you barely miss it
and the tray closes, your DVD will be damaged. The tray is also
incredibly light and not very stable. It could easily break off
with the slightest amount of pressure.
It also doesn't handle double-sided DVDs very well, but those discs
are completely unreliable, so I cannot say 100 percent it is this
machine.
This Coby is compact, which is a plus. It isn't a bad looking unit,
either. It just isn't very durable. It might be a good, cheap buy
for someone who needs to get their mature tween or teen a
replacement, but it should not be around small kids or pets, who
could easily tear it up.
It's not great, but it isn't the worst electronic I've ever
purchased.
If you need a good-quality DVD player that won't bust your budget,
spend a little extra to get the Toshiba SD4200 Digital Progressive
Scan DVD Player, Black. (As of this posting, there is less than $10
difference.) I will likely purchase another Toshiba, simply because
it is good quality, a good price and is compatible with everything
I have. I want an extra on hand for emergency DVD break downs. It
was well worth the money. I wish I had used my trade credit for
something else.
easy to useReviewed by David Ross, 2010-02-10
My mom is not dvd capable and I needed something really easy for her to use but the remote is really small and it has too many buttons for her. The buttons on the dvd are really hard to see too. I had to make her a label. I also couldn't get a universal remote to work on the dvd.
Great price and works well.Reviewed by Kristen Rivera, 2010-02-06
I bought this for the upstairs TV that the kids use and it works great and very affordable!
Don't buy Coby brand.Reviewed by Rolf Redford, 2010-01-24
The first dvd I played on it were never opened before, so dvd is
perfect.
One glitch.
Second dvd, also brand new. few brief skips, several
glitches.
Third dvd, also new. One full second skip, some missed subtitles,
and few glitches.
Yeah I'm returning it.
Don't even buy it for kids. There's better and cheaper ones.
Know whats worse of it all? The remote and machine doesn't have
support for fast forward/back... No you can't re-watch a scene
without going back a chapter.
