Does exactly what I wanted it to doReviewed by Eric A. Koenig, 2010-03-05
I got this product after my other DVD player died. I chose this item because it was not ultra expensive but more importantly, I wanted to play files from a USB stick. It has been perfect for that. I have watched several .AVI files off of the stick and it will also play music files. The USB menu is easy to navigate. The DVD's play fine. The machine itself looks a little cheap and I don't know how long it will hold up. The one thing I miss about my other DVD player was the fact that it was a five disc changer so my wife and I had our different DVD's in the tray to go at a moment's notice. I can live with a single tray as long as the USB works as well as it has
Great Price. Great Player.Reviewed by dls, 2010-03-04
I now have two of these DVD players and have each of them are hooked up to Philips LCD's (one a 47" and the other a 52"). They both have worked great. Good clean picture and nice upscaling. The only drawback I've experienced is that once you push "eject", it takes about 10 seconds for the slot to open up. One cool thing about hooking this up to a Philips TV: When you put a DVD in the player, it automatically turns on the TV and automatically switches the input over to the DVD players input. Pretty cool:) Updating the firm is also a piece of cake. Philips has a nice website where you simply download the firmware update to a thumb drive and put the thumb drive into the USB port on the DVD player. Easy.
Great piece of equipment for the priceReviewed by A. D. Deter, 2010-03-03
A nice piece of equipment for the price.
I had the predecessor machine which was the 5690, but it died. I
really liked the fact that it played DVDs, CDs, AVIs, and had the
USB socket to play files from a memory stick. It had a really
crappy remote, which was the biggest downfall.
Well it died after heavy use and so I went for the 5990. It has all
the same versatility, but the remote is very much better. It feels
less cheap, and you don't have to be so precise about pointing it
in exactly the straight line of sight. (The signal light on the old
remote was recessed and I think that caused the issue, the new one
is much better.)
Also, it plays both NTSC and the format used in Britain, which is
PAl, so the DVDs that my dad records for me in England, which are
not region coded, will play.
This is all on my 15 year old 20 inch television, which has no
bells and whistles. The player translates PAL to NTSC output, so
the tv does not have to do anything to read the signal. I can't
speak to the HDMI Upconversion as said tv would not know hidef from
a hole in the wall.
And onto region coding. Don't get me wrong, I understand why the
studios insist on region coding to protect their various
international rights. I however have bought dvds in the US and in
the UK. These are legally bought in the market they were released
in. I think it is unreasonable to expect that I sell my UK discs
and repurchase them in the US, when I moved here four years ago. So
the setup instructions that can be found in other reviews work. I
have tried it with Region 1 (USA) and Region 2 (Europe) discs and
it works just fine. It also works with a Japanese released dvd
which is Region 2 and NTSC, sort of halfway bewteen the US and UK
discs.
My only hope is that it lasts longer than my old 5690, whose motor
burned out after three years of (admittedly heavy) use.
A Solid Upscale DVD playerReviewed by Kevin Cho, 2010-02-19
This is a good DVD player with HDMI connection for HDTV. This DVD player will upscale to 1080 resolution. What I like about this DVD player is that this one plays DVD+R, DVD-R, and even play Divx, mpeg movies off the USB connection.
Awesome !!!!Reviewed by Matthew Swain, 2010-02-18
I purchased this product at the suggestion of a friend who had also bought one, and it is everything I hoped for. It plays my dvd's and it plays movies right off my zip drive, so no more having to watch downloaded movies on my little computer screen, which is much more convenient (and less embarrassing) when having company over to watch a movie. I love it ! Good Job Philips !
